Doing their thing to show up for their loved ones, even when we don't understand it.
Especially when we don't understand it.
Today, we're talking about her. The original ride or die. The first person who ever loved you without asking why.
Even when you didn't deserve it.
Even after you slammed your bedroom door so hard the picture frame fell off the wall.
Even after you screamed "I HATE YOU" at the top of your lungs over something so small you can't even remember what it was now.
You went to bed angry. She went to bed worried. And in the morning, breakfast was already on the table.
She never made you apologize. She just loved you through it. Because that's what she does.
You called from school with a stomachache that was probably 70% real, 30% "I just want to be home."
She didn't ask which one it was. She just said "okay baby, I'm on my way."
She used PTO for you. She used sick days for you. She made up excuses to her boss for you. She'd come pick you up, drive you home, put on your favorite show, and bring you ginger ale in your favorite cup.
You don't remember if you actually felt sick. You remember her hand on your forehead. You remember her saying "you'll feel better soon, baby."
You feel that hand on your forehead now and you're 30.
Her one Saturday off. Her dinner with her own friend. Her whatever-it-was that she was looking forward to.
You needed something. She showed up.
She doesn't even tell you what she gave up for you. She just shows up. Every time. Like it's nothing.
It wasn't nothing.
When the world is too loud.
When you got dumped and you can't even speak.
When you didn't get the job and you feel like a failure.
When you're 28 and you still don't know what you're doing with your life.
She doesn't have a script. She just KNOWS. Because she's been watching you cry since you were a baby. She's an expert in your tears. She invented your comfort.
She's the happiest she's been all week when you call her.
Not when she got promoted. Not when she finally got a day to herself. Not when she splurged on the thing she's been wanting.
When her grown adult kid called just to say hi.
She didn't even need a reason. She just wanted to hear your voice.
When was the last time you called your mama?
Not texted. Not sent her a meme. Not liked her Facebook post.
Called.
Today is the day. Pick up the phone. Tell her you love her. Tell her you remember the ginger ale and the forehead check and the way she always took the fall.
She'll act like it's no big deal.
It is the biggest deal.
Happy Mother's Day to the moms. The OG besties. The ones who showed up before any of us knew how to ask.
We love you. 💜
