How Spontaneous Are You? Would You Do a Side Quest With a Complete Stranger?

2026-05-09

Like seriously. On a scale from "I plan my Saturdays 3 weeks in advance" to "let's drive 2 hours for tacos because the lighting is good"... where do you fall?

Because here's the thing nobody tells you about adult friendships: they almost never start in a structured, planned, "let's get coffee in 4 weeks" kind of way. They start in side quests. The random, slightly chaotic, "why not" moments where you say yes to something weird and end up with a person.

So here's the question: would you actually do one with a complete stranger?

Pick your side quest. Be honest.

🧺 Picnic at the Park

Grab a blanket, some snacks, meet a stranger at the park, exist on the grass for 2 hours. No pressure, no agenda. Half conversation, half people watching.

Bonus points if you bring grapes. Idk why. Grapes just elevate any picnic.

Spontaneity level: 4/10. Easy entry. No commitment.

📸 Disposable Camera Walk

Buy a cheap disposable camera. Walk around a part of your city you've never been to. Take pictures of everything that catches your eye. Get them developed a week later and meet up to look at them together.

This sounds dumb until you do it and realize it's actually one of the most fun afternoons you've ever had.

Spontaneity level: 6/10. You're committing to TWO hangouts. Brave.

🌅 Sunrise Hike

Okay yes, waking up at 5am with someone you barely know sounds insane. But there's something about doing something hard with another human at an absurd hour. You can't fake it at 5am. You're both tired, you're both questioning your life choices, you're both watching the same sky turn pink. That's bonding.

Spontaneity level: 8/10. You're trusting a stranger with your sleep. Iconic.

💧 Chase Waterfalls

Pull up a map. Find a waterfall within 2 hours of you. Drive there. That's the whole plan.

The randomness is the entire point. You'll get lost, you'll stop at a weird gas station, you'll see something cool you didn't expect. By the time you get back, you'll have inside jokes for life.

Spontaneity level: 9/10. You're getting in a car with a stranger. Wild.

🛶 Paddle Board or Kayak

Water plus low stakes equals fun. You can talk while paddling. You can be silent and just float. You can fall in and laugh about it. Nothing about being on water requires deep conversation, which weirdly makes deep conversation easier.

Spontaneity level: 5/10. You're committing to wet hair. Worth it.

🎨 Paint at the Park

Bring a small canvas, some cheap acrylics, and a bottle of water. Set up at the park. Paint whatever's in front of you. It will be bad. That's the entire point.

Lower pressure than dinner, more interesting than coffee, and you walk away with a (terrible) souvenir.

Spontaneity level: 3/10. Lowest stakes on this list. Start here.

🍜 Try a Random New Restaurant

Open Google Maps. Find a restaurant near you that you've never heard of. Go. With a stranger or with someone you barely know.

Trying new food together is an unexpectedly powerful bonding experience. You're both vulnerable (what if the food is gross?), you both have to react in real time. It's basically a friendship cheat code.

Spontaneity level: 7/10. You're risking a bad meal AND a bad vibe. Bold.

So, would you actually do one?

Honestly, the hardest part of any side quest isn't the planning. It's just deciding to do it.

Most of us are scrolling on the couch right now thinking "ugh, I wish I had something fun to do this weekend." But the side quest is RIGHT THERE. We're just waiting for someone to invite us.

Be the someone.

That's why we built KrewQuest. Because the bestie you're looking for is also scrolling on her couch right now, also wishing someone would invite her. You just gotta find her.

Your bestie is out there. Go side quest with her. 💜
